Highway Department

Brule County Highway Department maintains approximately 520 miles:      

90 miles of oil roads and 430 miles of gravel roads, plus 14 bridges.

MAINTENANCE

The Highway Department is responsible for blading, graveling, culverts, approaches, backsloping, tree removal(in county right away), resealing oil roads, patching, signing, mowing, rebuild gravel roads, snow removal, sanding(designated areas), and bridge repair.

MAINTAINS THE NOXIOUS WEED & PEST CONTROL PROGRAM 

  • Weed control on approximately 520 miles (1040 of Brule County right-of -way).
     Full spray (county ditches)

  • Spot spray (county ditches)

  • Handle weed complaints & Monitor all land in Brule County

  • Check complaints & send out voluntary compliance notices

  • Enforce noxious weed control (when necessary) 

  • Give and deliver addresses to new dwellings

  • Maintains all 911 street & avenue signs

MAINTAINS 911 ADDRESSING 

THE FOLLOWING NEED HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT'S APPROVAL 

  • Anything involving County right-of-ways

  • Trenching across or under County roads

  • Any dust control products to County roads - application can be accessed below

  • All hay bales in county road ditches must be removed by Oct. 15

Snow and Ice in Public Right of Ways

South Dakota Codified Law 31-32-3.1 states that intentional dumping in the highway right of ways, which includes approaches and ditches, is a prohibited violation and is a Class I misdemeanor. Maximum penalty for a Class I misdemeanor is $2,000 fine and up to one year in

jail.

 

 

 

Brule County is asking residents to not push snow in to the public right of ways for the following reasons:

 

 

  • lt is a safety issue for the rest of the traveling public

    • It can cause damage to county equipment

  • Brule County Highway Department has 520 miles of road to open when it snows dumping in public right of ways can cause extra delays in opening the roads

    • Dumping in the right of ways can create drifts that make road conditions bad all winter long
